ABSTRACT

The Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC), under the aegis of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), is experimenting with the use of electronic information exchange in selected aspects of its work of promoting hardware and software standardization in microprocessor/large scale integration (LSI) products. Six potential advantages in using computerized conferencing for JEDEC committee and task group work are described. JEDEC's activities using the Electronic Information Exchange System (EIES) are discussed, including the use of specially tailored software to assist members in collective development of terms and definitions, a first step in setting standards. Automated data collection, as well as evaluation and facilitation of the project, are described. Several future enhancements, including the use of intelligent terminals, are mentioned. The JEDEC-EIES project is one of the NSF-sponsored operational trials of electronic information exchange for small research communities.
