ABSTRACT

The LegiTech-EIES project is one of the operational trials of electronic information exchange supported by the National Science Foundation. Legislative researchers in 25 states and resource-reviewers in a like number of Federal agencies and other resource organizations are using EIES to exchange inquiries, responses, and leads about scientific and technical matters of interest to state legislatures. Specially tailored software has been developed within EIES to provide LegiTech participants with computer-supported entry of inquiries, responses, and leads; with the ability to select only those inquiries of interest; and with automated data base management of all the information. This software is described briefly. The relationship between LegiTech and the National Conference of State Legislatures' (NCSL's) Legislative Information System is discussed. A description of types of information needed by legislatures leads into a general discussion of information exchange processes for policy makers at other levels of government through a series of "PoliTechs." Further enhancements using intelligent terminals and microprocessor-based interconnections of computer systems are mentioned.
