ABSTRACT

In the UK, the energy industries are the largest consumers of energy, using more than 30% of the total primary energy input. The first part of this chapter examines the five energy industries – coal mining, oil refining, coke, gas and electricity production – using the data provided in the Report on the UK Census of Production 1968. The results obtained are compared with those from other sources. and in an the second part of the chapter attempt is made to put these results in a wider context by examining some of the implications for alternative sources of energy.
