ABSTRACT
Food production in the industrialised countries is heavily dependent on inputs of energy from fossil fuels. In this chapter, these inputs are analysed with particular attention to the UK. A wide range of data is presented, covering the total energy used and how this relates to factors such as outputs, labour and land. The importance of low energy alternatives for Third World countries is emphasised.
