ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the more exciting question: How big can the other scales of society be in order to benefit from the economies of scale and be beautiful? One possible solution to the problems of the increase in scale of contemporary society would be to utilize the surface of the sea for living space and to make greater use of our waterways for marine mass transit. According to John P. Craven, the cultural advantages of water-based cities have been demonstrated in the neolithic lake societies, and the technological feasibility of ocean cities has been demonstrated by the numerous varieties of offshore platforms produced. The utilization of the waterways for revitalization of the entrepot functions of the city appears attractive for many cities. Insofar as distribution of usable space is concerned, it matches that desired for the idealized three-dimensional city module.
