ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the management of macro-engineering problems provides an adequate framework to describe macro-engineering systems that encompass their assessment in economic, social, political, and technological terms. The critical need is for constructs that will direct the advances and applications of macro-engineering so as to benefit management and the public. R. P. Godwin’s examples of macro-engineering wonders are more closely allied to Dr. E. S. Ferguson’s general definition of macro-engineering projects. Godwin also distinguished between macro-engineering projects and programs. The chapter focuses on the evaluation of macro-systems, it became necessary to review some case studies of macro-engineering programs for purposes of contributing towards a body of knowledge on macro-systems. Macro-engineering programs generally originated from the need of a nation to meet a single objective. The financing of macro-systems is as complicated as the assessment of macro-engineering projects, programs and systems. Macro-engineering systems are no longer self-contained but are highly interrelated.
