ABSTRACT

Large-scale engineering projects imply the need to record, classify, store, modify and transmit large amounts of information. The demands for information handling capabilities, and man’s attempts to fulfill these demands in the context of macro-projects were probably the principal factor leading to the development of an organizational infrastructure. Within these ordered schemes the transmission of information could take place in a more effective and efficient manner. Communications and computation are critical engineering needs directly related to information. These are two important technologies almost always advanced by any macro-engineering project. In any macro-engineering pursuit many individual technologies are utilized, according to any definition. The computer and communications industries, of course, have also seen their share of large-scale engineering; and the results of many of macro projects have had an important impact on mankind, and on human values. Communications technology, transportation technology, and computer technology are three examples of systems technologies.
