ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses some of the implications for macro-engineering which she sees growing out of our response to the immense. She explores the impact of man-made “bigness” on as consumers, as spectators/builders/users of the great macro-engineering projects. The immensity of macro-engineering projects often arouses the emotions of both awe and fear in man. Macro-engineers and planners must develop the ability to say “no” to some macro-projects and become sophisticated about when and why to accept or reject a project. The author examines the impact of man-made “bigness” on as consumers, as spectators/builders/users of the great macro-engineering projects. Transferring the principle to macro-projects, it is clear that public education about the thinking that went into the planning, about the opportunities and the dangers and the drawbacks involved, and are of the essence. Models and technological data of all sorts should be readily available to everyone.
