ABSTRACT

The Sierra Club’s John Muir Award was presented at the EARTHCARE banquet to an outstanding champion of conservation in the United States, the Honorable William O. Douglas, who at the time of the conference was an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. The Honorable Raymond J. Sherwin, judge of Superior Court in Solano County, California, vice president for the Sierra Club’s international program, and (with Dr. Elvis J. Stahr, president of the National Audubon Society) cochairman of the EARTHCARE Conference, presented the award to Justice Douglas on behalf of the club. In accordance with longstanding tradition, the recipient’s identity was not disclosed until the banquet itself was under way.
