ABSTRACT

This chapter explains about the urgency of preserving ecosystems and the dilemma it poses—specifically about the urgency of preserving natural ecosystems, not the man-dominated ecosystems that are taking over. The Canadian and the American governments are fully aware of the ecological hazards of undisciplined exploitation where ecosystems are so fragile; wherever one travels in the far north, one now meets teams making environmental impact studies, environmental conferences, even those sponsored by organizations dedicated to wildlife and wild places, seem invariably to focus on man’s survival. An intelligent person who watches birds inevitably becomes an environmentalist. The Honorable Russell E. Train, administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency, emphasized this point: The Environmentalist is often portrayed by his critics as a romantic, distracted by fantasies of bluebirds and daisies, a birdwatcher oblivious to the practical needs of making a living.
