ABSTRACT

The description of the environmental consequences of the war on Cyprus was submitted by Mr. Renos Solomides, chairman of the Association for the Protection of Cyprus Environment, one of the cooperating sponsors of the EARTHCARE Conference. Cyprus was a happy island, perched in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Cyprus had been hoping that the rest of the world would respect its serenity and unspoiled environment and would allow it to remain an oasis amidst a troubled and polluted world. The association started to pressure the government of Cyprus to legislate measures to save the environment from the encroachments of man and his technology, to protect the environment for coming generations. The worst of the fires occurred in the old Paphos and Troodos forests—woodlands that provide the only natural habitat of the Cyprus moufflon, a race unique in the world and one that has long been in danger of extinction.
