ABSTRACT

Physical inactivity is a significant public health issue that disproportionately affects children and youth with disabilities around the globe. Adapted physical educators are excellently positioned to address this issue by promoting physical activity both within and outside of the school setting. This chapter aims to help adapted physical educators understand the issue of physical inactivity from a public health perspective and reference interventions that can potentially be effective for their students. This chapter also briefly summarizes the current state of the science, along with potential avenues for advancing the science. Overall, researchers have conducted a tremendous amount of work to understand the issue of physical inactivity among children with disabilities. While there have been an encouraging number of potentially effective interventions for children with disabilities, far more work is needed to identify effective strategies that can reach and impact children on a larger scale.
