ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the emergence and utilization of evidence-based research to support adapted physical education (APE). At the beginning of the chapter, pros and cons of utilizing evidence-based practice for decision making in APE are discussed, followed by a chronology of the scholarly discussion in this regard. Subsequently, evidence relating to selected intervention approaches within self-contained and integrated APE contexts is summarized and synthesized. In each of the sections comprising the review, the intervention strategies are portrayed and the research evidence regarding their application is compiled and assessed for degree of evidence. Finally, recommendations for additional research as well as how to enhance APE practices utilizing the available information are proposed.
