ABSTRACT

The daily life of Palestinians and their interchange with their topographic and agricultural environment have produced a large number of names for tools, objects, and installations that have been basic to agricultural and domestic domains. The names in question were partially handed down from older generations. They have been kept in the local popular memory and they express the shape and function of objects and installations. Making use of available ethnographic and linguistic data, this chapter surveys the cultural and linguistic background of these names, specifying the factors that have contributed to the naming of the artifacts and agricultural installations.
