ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a case study of the Brazilian Enterprise for Research and Industrial Innovation (EMBRAPII), which was founded in 2014 by stakeholders from academia and industry to address key bottlenecks associated with fostering research and innovation in Brazil. Firms often lack the knowledge or competences required to bring an idea to market, and need to engage with research institutes, other companies, and universities in order to accelerate the innovation process. This chapter focuses on how EMBRAPII has sought to address some of these challenges to facilitate research collaboration in the country. It discusses the main features of the EMBRAPII system, the evolution of its network over time, and its results to date. The chapter highlights the ways in which the system has fostered changes to the culture of innovation, both in the units that are incorporated into EMBRAPII’s network and in the firms that co-invest in R&D.
