ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on collaborations between industry and universities in an internationally comparative context and discusses indicators that may be useful for evaluating these partnerships. Specifically, the chapter looks at some of Brazil’s top universities (located in the state of São Paulo) and examines how they perform relative to other top U.S. universities across four dimensions: (1) the amount of business sponsorship of university R&D; (2) the quantity and intensity of university/business co-authorship in scientific articles; (3) the number of patents and related indicators; and (4) the number of startups created by students and faculty. These are reasonably simple indicators that can be identified and tracked by each university and by governmental agencies, which would help provide more rigor to debates about how universities in Brazil are engaging with business.
