ABSTRACT

Various catastrophic events such as wars, natural disasters, depletion of natural resources, and hunger are occurring almost every day, in different parts of the world. It is more likely that women and children, rather than men, will get hurt in these incidents. Women also get the greatest share of injury even though they own only a negligible part of the world income and assets. We need to strengthen the position of women to better cope with the effects of disasters, find creative solutions, and perhaps take proactive measures. Empowerment of women seems to offer a potential in dealing with these problems. Establishing gender equality in society is a prerequisite for women empowerment. The purpose of this article is to elaborate on the empowerment of women and to investigate how economic empowerment of women arising from gender equality at its base can affect a nation’s economy positively.
