      ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates whether and to what extent the rhetorical structures of English language abstracts published in Chinese-language journals in the fields of Accounting and Finance correspond to international generic conventions governing academic abstract writing in these two fields. The chapter focuses on a comparative study of two corpora of English-language abstract texts, taken from leading international journals in Accounting and Finance and Chinese-language journals in these two fields respectively. Using the methodology of move structure analysis, the study identifies a number of important differences in the typical rhetorical move structures of abstracts in these two corpora, and across the two academic disciplines that these corpora represent. The chapter suggests ways in which its findings may help EAP teachers to improve the English abstract writing skills of Chinese Accounting and Finance academics, and thus help them to disseminate their work more effectively among their international peers.
