ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the work of organisational consultation to an institution in transition from care home to supported housing. Stig of the Dump is a classic children’s novel by Clive King, first published in 1963. The fantasy manifests either through ‘turning a blind eye’ in care homes themselves or through creating a ‘gap in services’ which potentially leaves Stigs with nowhere to go: their only option is to make the best of being dumped. The fantasy manifests either through ‘turning a blind eye’ in care homes themselves or through creating a ‘gap in services’ which potentially leaves Stigs with nowhere to go: their only option is to make the best of being dumped. In order to make true contact with the reality of community care, it is necessary to get close enough to the experience of staff and residents at registered care homes.
