ABSTRACT

Imagine removing the limitation of the school garden and letting the nature around the school – the wider school garden – form the extension of the classroom and the wild plants growing there serve as a basis for heathy and ecological learning. In Turkey, wild edible plants have been an integral part of human diets since prehistoric times and are common in local Turkish cuisine. Since ancient times, wild edible plants have been essential to diets all over the world. Tribal people and small holder farmers are still dependent on wild edible plants while in the Western world a renewed interest in wild plants for modern haute cuisine is appearing. Wild edible plants are known to be high in nutrients and can thus improve the quality and diversity of diets. The collection of wild edible species offers a cheap solution to boosting school meals with a variety of nutrients.
