ABSTRACT

An article entitled “Everything Wrong with Asian Privilege” appeared in the April edition of The Challenge, Tacoma Community College’s (TCC) online student newspaper. The article, written under the pseudonym “An Asian Person” and published with a picture of a stereotypical Japanese “Dragon Lady,” claimed that Asian Americans enjoy entitlements not given to other minority groups. According to the author of the article, Asian immigrants are not expected to learn English or asked to become Americanized or to go back to their countries. The Challenge is only available to TCC students, so the article remained online without receiving much attention from TCC staff and/or faculty. TCC students, however, battled with one another in the article’s comments section. The majority of the comments were in support of the article’s claim about Asian privilege. Only a few students chose to point out the article’s misinformation and generalizations.
