ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors provide an approach for the comprehensive assessment of behavior and social-emotional skills of preschool children. The authors first share a framework for understanding the development of overarching behavioral, social, and emotional competencies and specific observable skills. Then, the authors provide a comprehensive approach to the assessment of such domains across contexts and some of the natural challenges evaluators might face when assessing young children. Specific examples and descriptions of multiple methods for assessment are included, such as behavioral observations, interviews, and rating scales. The specific measures included represent those that might be used with research or practice settings; those that measure strengths and/or pathology; and those that may be used for the purposes of screening, formative assessment, and/or diagnosis.
