ABSTRACT

Digital technologies have transformed the tourism and hospitality industry into an industry focused on internet-enabled technologies and the use of data analytics. Much of these new technologies have occurred as a result of increased competitiveness in the global tourism industry that has a flow on effect on other industry segments. The aim of this chapter is to focus on the reasons why digital innovation is important in a tourism context and the reasons why more businesses need to focus on digitalisation. In addition, the changes to society as a result of digital technologies are discussed in terms of more co-creation occurring between customers and businesses. This has radically changed the nature and content of the tourism industry into one that is heavily influenced by digital change.
