ABSTRACT

Research into the Paleoindian period in Mexico and Central America has accelerated significantly in recent years. For countries to the south of Mexico, much of what is known comes from surface-collected fluted points. For better or worse, outside of Mexico most Paleoindian data come from surface-collected fluted points. This chapter presents the results of excavations and ongoing analysis of a small site, Yuzanu 50, which dates to the Terminal Pleistocene. Generally, the collection of flakes and flake fragments from Yuzanú 50 ranges from very small pressure flakes for the purpose of defining and stabilizing striking platforms to larger thinning flakes. Most flakes are distinctly curved in the longitudinal section, from their striking platforms to their distal terminus. A preliminary scan of the assemblage for refitting flakes found at least two artifacts that overlap slightly at their distal ends.
