ABSTRACT

In 1998, a systematic study of Paleoindian sites around the Basin of Mexico was started. Despite the middle Holocene date obtained for Tepexpan Man using uranium series, Tepexpan continues to be an important Preceramic locality for the Basin. The aim of this chapter is to summarize new stratigraphic studies and radiocarbon dates from the Late Pleistocene fossiliferous sedimentary sequence in the Tequixquiac Basin and to try and resolve some of the questions that have been raised related to the interpretation of the Sacro de Tequixquiac. There are later prehistoric sites in the Basin of Mexico that also show that volcanic eruptions had major impacts on the cultural development of the Archaic populations. The only way to understand the true nature of such valuable information is to integrate the archaeological, anthropological, sedimentological, and volcanological data so that the geoarchaeology of important Paleoindian sites is better understood.
