ABSTRACT

Manjeet Pardesi in ‘Indian Strategic Policy Towards China' provides a historical overview of the levels of cooperation and competition between India and China by analysing their relationship through four main phases. Pardesi argues that India is pursuing the two-fold strategy of seeking ‘strategic space' in Asia to create a multipolar balance of power to counter Chinese hegemony, whilst also deepening economic cooperation with China. Yet Pardesi argues that if China continues to deny this ‘strategic space' in Asia by escalating border conflicts, then it is likely that despite economic cooperation, Indo-China tensions will likely continue to escalate.
