ABSTRACT

This chapter characterizes the relevant political and economic dimensions of Indonesia in the post-WWII context, with attention to the relationship between the government of Indonesia (GOI) and the World Bank. The chapter then transitions to focus on the origins of the governance reforms that are discussed at length in the following chapters. The programs borne out of GOI and World Bank collaboration in the early 1990s laid the groundwork for the development and advancement of programs following the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC). The way that governance reforms were further advanced through the context of the AFC is discussed further in the next chapter.
