ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on work originally published in 2012 (Bozalek & Boughey 2012) which used Nancy Fraser’s (2008, 2009) work on social justice to analyse the logic of policy and practice in SouthAfrica from about 1990 onwards. In this chapter, we ‘update’ our 2012 analysis in the light of the changes we have identified at both global and national levels. The first part of the chapter provides an update of the current higher education context, particularly in SouthAfrica; the second section outlines Fraser’s three-dimensional framework drawing on her understanding of social justice. We then move on to an analysis of South African higher education, with a particular focus on Fraser’s construct of misframing because of its power to illuminate exclusion and what needs to be done to achieve inclusion.
