ABSTRACT

Vietnamese humanism is one framework that can be used to explain Vietnamese choices, actions, and habit patterns in daily life. In The Tale of Kieu, these philosophical traditions are illustrated in numerous ways and are woven and integrated seamlessly just as Vietnam culture is a mosaic of these traditions. Vietnamese adoption of the Confucian idea around mandate also incorporated ideas related to fate, which was also strongly prevalent in Vietnamese’s Indigenous beliefs and Buddhism at the time. The messages of wisdom in this tale arguably have relevancy for Vietnamese. As Vietnamese people read and reread the tale, they become active participants in extending the wisdom that has been passed down through generation after generation.
