ABSTRACT

The Columbian press called was invented by Mr. George Clymer, of Philadelphia, about thirty years since, and made the subject of a patent; shortly after its invention, Mr. Clymer proceeded to Europe, where he introduced them to the notice of the profession in 1818, greatly improved in their manufacture. The most prominent manufacturers of Double and Single Cylinder Presses, are A. B. Taylor, and Hoe & Co. A wrought iron press, invented and manufactured by Mr. A. Ramage. The principal difference between this and other presses, is the use of a frame entirely of wrought iron, judiciously constructed. The Smith press was invented by Mr. Peter Smith, of New York, and is manufactured by Hoe & Co., and Worrall & Co. The wells press was invented by John I. Wells, of Hartford, Conn. about the year 1816; when well made, they were excellent presses, but they have given place to those of more invention.
