ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the interrelationship between the space of the Forbidden City, Beijing and body in terms of affective approaches in the contemporary study of the sociological body as well as a more-than-representational approach in apprehending architectural space. Particularly, the examination on the bodily movement in the space reflects an intimate interaction, a mutual impact between the heritage space which is highly functional, narrative, and provocative in cultural and political terms, and the body. The chapter argues that the body co-produces affect with the space, and that the body's own subjectivity is key in this co-production. Moreover, this research has found that changes to the sociological body in turn change how a heritage space affects its visitors.
