ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and outlines how it seeks to provide regional security, institutionalise cooperation, and preserve the political status quo. It also explores two agenda items advanced separately by Russia and China which represent areas of contention among the other SCO members: greater geopolitical aspirations and economic integration, respectively. In June 2017 the SCO undertook its most significant expansion to include India and Pakistan. Therefore, this chapter will also consider how this will undoubtedly affect the organisation’s finances, power dynamics and security mission.
