ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we share with the reader initial reflections on ongoing research experiences in Afetos: Research Group on Communication, Accessibility, and Vulnerabilities. The centrality of the research is related to the presence of people with disabilities not only as subjects to be researched but as an active part of encounters that awaken us, as researchers, to the potential of the new mobilities paradigm to reflect upon the correlations between mobility and immobility. In a world full of movement, what does it mean to be unable to move or to move with restrictions? The project I Exist and Move: Experiences and Mobility of People with Disabilities, an example of collaborative research methodology under construction with vulnerable subjects, points us to possible paths and relationships between mobility, immobility, and disability studies, since the interfaces between these fields can shed light not only upon central issues that arise for mobility research, but they can also contribute to broadening our understanding of disability.
