ABSTRACT

Issues about race are of course inextricably bound up with those which concern gender and class and discussion of one in isolation from the others creates an artificial separation, and one which cannot always be maintained when discussing physical education. Physical education in the National Curriculum has the following aims according to the Non-Statutory Guidance provided by the National Curriculum Council. The non-statutory guidance offered by the National Curriculum Council also makes reference to multicultural issues under a section which considers equal opportunities. There is no shortage of evidence about the difficulties encountered within education by both Afro-Caribbean and Asian pupils. In order to understand how issues of race may impact upon the experience of individual children, it is important to recognize that school physical education is allied with, and relates to, sport and recreational activity in ways which are rarely found in other subject areas.
