ABSTRACT

Numerous broken fragments of an elaborate canopied screen can be shown to be most likely derived from the high altar screen of the cathedral, which was pulled down and destroyed during the Civil War. The fragments were discovered buried in the damaged remains of a vaulted tunnel in the north transept, excavated in the 19th century. They can be related to the only known drawing of the screen and a partial reconstruction of its form has been formulated. The screen formed an example of a type also apparently seen slightly earlier in date at Exeter Cathedral (destroyed) and the surviving later example of the Neville screen at Durham Cathedral.
