ABSTRACT

The intersection of mixed methods research with social network analysis forms a hybrid design that emphasizes the meaningful integration of qualitative and quantitative strands to enhance understanding of the structures and dynamics of social networks. In this chapter, we applied this perspective in our review of the authors’ use of mixed methods social network analysis (MMSNA) within Chapters 10 through 13. From these chapters, we found that researchers using MMSNA formed intersections between the two approaches at various levels, including methods, methodology, and assumptions, creating a variety of ways for MMSNA to manifest. Focusing on the mixed methods elements, we examined the underlying reasons and logic that the researchers used to integrate the quantitative and qualitative methods to address their network-based research questions. We conclude with recommendations for additional ways that MMSNA researchers can apply strategies advanced in the mixed methods literature.
