ABSTRACT

As indicated in this volume on MMSNA, in certain situations the context does not allow for the collection of accurate quantitative data while the research question calls for a traditional quantitative approach in order to predict relationships. This chapter provides a method to use the richness of video data (i.e., second-by-second interaction between individuals) in order to predict the development of information exchange between medical professionals. The chapter demonstrates how video observations can be used to analyze the development of information exchange patterns. Part of the chapter is devoted to explaining the analytical framework, relational event modeling, and providing an example of data preparation, analysis, and interpretation. We analyzed videotaped information exchanges in 22 teams working in emergency care simulations.
