ABSTRACT

Previous research has conceptually developed various strategies of mixing multiple research approaches. But how do these strategies play out in practice? In this chapter, I create a map of mixed methods social network analysis (MMSNA) research designs in education and learning research. For this, I review and code the studies that apply MMSNA in this research domain. I then use social network analysis to study how researchers sequenced qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and data analysis. This work extends and complements previous theorizing on mixed methods research designs and the empirical work undertaken by Bryman (2006). The unique perspective taken in this research allows for a flexible yet thorough discussion of mixed methods designs in education and learning research.
