ABSTRACT

This chapter theoretically develops and teases out the typology for classification, drawing on both author experiences in each of the spaces as well as the theoretical and philosophical positions that have been developed to help us understand fans, identity, and organizing or communing spaces (particularly those that are not often fixed or in permanent spaces). One fascinating practice that exists across many different fan spaces is that of “costuming.” For the sports fan, wearing our team’s colors with pride is an important declaration of fidelity and collectivism in a sea of individuals who otherwise would not identify with each other. Often, clothing, accessories, and other items that are worn or exchanged in these spaces are not sold outside of these spaces, meaning that these markets are transitory in nature. In addition, consider the particular signifiers for the fan group reader are in and out of. Such observations help to better interrogate the liminal space reader are occupying as a Member.
