ABSTRACT

This chapter examines practice implications for promoting resilience through trauma-informed group care with children and young people. It considers opportunities and potential barriers inherent within the group care task. A resilience-focused approach is promoted, emphasizing a shift from the negative focus of children’s problem-saturated narratives of trauma, to a focus on children’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Attributes that contribute to outcomes of resilience are considered, including the timing of opportunities, coupled with the readiness of the child to engage with the new opportunity. The chapter asserts that the promotion of resilience through trauma-informed care will not only serve to assist children in coming to terms with their past lives but also prepare them to cope with their futures.
