ABSTRACT

This chapter argues the importance of building resilience in organizations and highlights the need for leaders to stop micromanaging everything, hoarding power and information.

One of the ways leaders in organizations can enable people to be resilient is to empower them by using the employee empowerment model created by Huq, titled Huq’s Model C (The psychology of employee empowerment: Concepts, critical themes and a framework for Implementation. Aldershot, UK: Gower), where the importance of the seven themes of employee empowerment are explained. Resilience is not only about the capacity of the leader as a resilient and individual force, but the collective strength of individuals who equally have the capacity to develop resilient skills to help the organization bounce back and continue to thrive through a culture of empowerment. For a resilient and empowered culture, organizations need to train and educate more employees than just their leaders. This is for the benefit of the organization and for the leaders themselves. What happens if leaders get sick? Organizations need to be able to function and sustain themselves in case of such adversity.
