ABSTRACT

Work is a major feature of so many people’s lives that it merits serious consideration. Indeed, the modern workplace, with its multiple challenges and intense pressures, is a social space where resilience can be very much needed at times. This chapter therefore explores the role of key stakeholders in the workplace in shaping how resilience features. Aspects of the workplace can either help or hinder resilience, thereby reinforcing the key point of the book that a holistic understanding is called for—one that locates resilience in its wider context, including the workplace. Presenting resilience as a characteristic of individuals runs the risk of contributing to the process of pathologizing people who in some way are struggling with aspects of working life, such as stress or bullying and harassment—hence the need for a more holistic approach to do justice to the complexities involved.
