ABSTRACT
A key message of the book is that resilience needs to be understood as much more than an individual characteristic or set of characteristics; the wider sociological context needs to be taken into consideration. This chapter shows how a language community can show resilience by resisting efforts to wipe out the language by stigmatizing and penalizing its use. It shows how the Welsh language has not only survived attempts to eradicate it but is now flourishing, with Welsh-medium education, newspapers, magazines, books, radio and television. The chapter explores the significance of language as a feature of identity and therefore raises issues for other language communities and their attempts to safeguard an important part of their culture and heritage.
