ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to develop a strong application for funding – whether from trusts and foundations, or statutory bids. It highlights the importance of strong organisational values and discusses how to draw on these values and on related activities to write authentic bids that differentiate an organisation’s unique offer. The chapter provides the tools for building a creative case for support including knowledge of effective budgeting. Culture has been described as ‘the complex of values, customs, beliefs and practices which constitute the way of life of a specific group’. In the arts and cultural sector, we are very concerned about whether donors and funders and the general public trust our charities. Many charitable trusts and foundations operate like private sector companies, in that they are usually endowed with a specific amount of money to achieve certain things.
