ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the literature on community-based school governance (CBSG) and social cohesion. It provides a description of the education system and social cohesion in Brcko. The chapter describes research methodology, followed by findings. It deals with the implications of the research findings. Community-based and ethnically balanced school governance is characterized by the selection process for school board (SB) members. The symbolic aspect of CBSG in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is the inclusion of a local community member. The member is selected from a local community board, a citizen society that is separate from the local government. Interviewees understand that the SB is the core of democratic school governance, and are of the opinion that they should be allowed more autonomy. Promoting social cohesion at the grassroots level in the post-conflict divided society of BiH still requires representation.
