ABSTRACT

The translations of Manuscripts which are included in Vol. II of these Memoirs are mostly concerned with the tribal legends or traditions of the Chad area and countries lying to the east or south-east of it in the Sudan belt. They illustrate, and in some measure explain, references and allusions to certain peoples concerned in the “Kanem Wars” of Imam Ahmed, among them the Kwararafa, with their governing caste the so-called Jukon*, who originally of cognate origin to the Mais of Kanem, occupied at different periods the Chad region, the region of the upper Gongola, and finally the region of the middle Benue, whence from their capitals Bepi and Wukari they extended their influence to the Cross River and even the Atlantic Ocean.
