ABSTRACT

The primary objective of this chapter is to identify the main forces of opposition against fascism in Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s. It will trace transnational connections, not only with Latin American neighbours (especially Argentina and Uruguay) but also with European and North American countries. The chapter will address both the networks created by immigrant anti-fascists (such as Italians, Germans, Spaniards and Portuguese) and those created nationally. It gives emphasis to the bridge between national and international concerns; and it demonstrates how the opposition to fascism in Brazil was both a national struggle and a global one.
