ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the evolution of non-Islamist civil society in Egypt since 2000. It discusses the fortunes and failures of the wider civil society sector, amid the backdrop of revolution and the two seismic political events in 2011 and 2013, respectively. The chapter begins with a look at the evolution of activist activity in the years that led to the January 25, 2011 uprising. It then outlines the protest movement’s growth and civil society expansion, including in media, during 2011–2013. In addition, it details the crackdown on all civil society activities that have ensued since 2013, which continues to the present day.
