ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the evolution of social media in Egypt and analyses their uses and development as agents and reflections of change in society. It follows the usage and the power of social media platforms such as blogs, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, and how Egyptians used them to push through social and political change. While social media’s power was at its peak during Egypt’s 25 January 2011 revolution, things changed dramatically as a reaction to the power struggle between the state and the people. The chapter highlights the power of social media as a tool, used sometimes strategically by the people, and used and controlled sometimes by the regime.
