ABSTRACT
There is a saying in te reo Māori: ‘Ka mua, ka muri’, which means ‘walking backwards into the future’. We can see our past, but the future eludes us; there is therefore no way to inform us of what lies ahead. The best we can do is to look to what came before for clues and advise as to how to approach the way forward, keenly aware that our future is as yet unwritten. The future evolves from the past but will be different, with the only certainty being change. This chapter presents the Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau way of ‘placemaking’ as a lived form of postdisciplinary knowledge-in-action, to transform cities into liveable, lovable spaces.
